How to Seed a Lawn

   Seeding
  1. Lawn should have at least 4 inches of loam or soil.
  2. If subsoil is sandy, 1 to 2 inches of clay should be spread over the area before you spread the loam.
  3. After loam has been smooth and graded, apply starter fertilizer (5-10-10). Scotts Starter Fertilizer is the best. Application rate is on the bag.
  4. Apply lime at 75 lbs. per 1,00 square feet for heavy clay base loam and 50 lbs. per 1,000 square feet for light sandy loam.
  5. Rake in lime and fertilizer.
  6. Finish grade
  7. Apply grass seed, approximately 5 lbs. per 1,00 square feet.
  8. Rake lightly with bamboo rake to plant seed. Seeds are planted 2 to 3 times the diameter of the seed. After raking you'll be able to see about one-fifth of the seed on top of the soil.
  9. Roll loam to firm seed bed. Make sure roller is dry or you will pick up the seed.
  10. Apply hay or straw 3 -4 s1raw layers thick. You should be able to see loam under hay. (2 bales per 1,000 sq. ft.).
  11. Water as soon as possible in order to wet the hay, preventing it from blowing away.
  12. Water according to instructions below.
  13. A second fertilization should occur 4 weeks after planting with regular lawn fertilizer, if the lawn was planted in the spring. Lawns planted after June, should not be fertilized again until first of September .
How to Care for a Newly Seeded Lawn
Once moisture has penetrated, the seed coat germination begins and the seed starts to grow. If the seed dries out to a certain point, the seed will die and the areas will have to be reseeded.

Recommended Watering
Water newly seeded lawns very heavily at first. Totally saturate the new loam. It may take 2 or 3 hours or more per section. Do not leave dry pockets in the new loam. Later on those dry areas will pull moisture away from the surface areas where the seed is.

After the total loam mass has been saturated concentrate on keeping the surface moist. When temperatures are above 60 degree, water once a day especially if it has been windy. Germination should take about 7 -10 days. As grass grows you may extend periods between watering. Never remove the hay mulch, it will decompose and add to the soil. If the grass seeding is successful you will lose site of the hay in about 3 weeks.

Recommended Mowing
If seeding is successful you should be ready for the :first mowing by day 21 (when grass is about 4 inches tall). Let soil dry out somewhat before mowing. It will :firm up the soil and mowing will do less damage to the new grass.

First mowing always set mower to highest cutting height and never use a riding mower for the :first few times. Set mower deck down, one setting for each mowing until you reach normal cutting height At :first mow each 5 -6 days or when necessary.
